Ward Zoning and Planning Committee Meeting: 8/30/03

Alderman's Update: Jonathan Turley, native to 48th ward, will be speaking about the Patriot's Act at Evan Congregational Church on 10/13. Alderman Smith and her staff are attending a wastewater management and urban design conference at the end of October through beginning of November. The demolition of 3 small homes in the 5200 block of N. Kenmore has begun. Public safety issues are being addressed for the 5100 and 6100 block of Winthrop. The police are addressing crime and safety issues with building and homeowners. Alderman Smith chose to not support legislation for mandatory set-asides for affordable housing and is choosing to deal with it on a case by case basis. Alderman Smith has sponsored an ordinance to deal with the property tax assessment.

Agenda Item #1: 6022 N. Kenmore, proposal for 8 unit condominium building needing alley access and a zoning exception to reduce building by 3 feet on either side. After much discussion, a motion to table this proposal was adopted with a 14-7 vote. The Edgewater block club needs more time to consider this proposal.

Agenda Item #2: Edgewater Triangle Neighborhood Association (ETNA) rezoning proposal to rezone from current R4 to R3 status to prevent tear-downs of single family homes for construction of 3-unit condominium buildings. Rezoned area would be along Victoria, Olive, Edgewater and Bryn Mawr between Glenwood and the alley east of Clark St. and along Hollywood between the alley east of Clark St. to Wayne Avenue. The motion was approved in a 22-2 vote in favor of this proposal.

Agenda Item #3: 5427 N. Broadway proposal has been tabled until the September meeting due to a design glitch.
