Somerset Place Rezoning March 29, 2011:
Alderman Smith will be introducing an ordinance to rezone the Somerset from a B1-5 to an R (residential) designation.  This is a defensive measure to prevent a nursing home from reopening there.  The former zoning allowed a nursing home as a special use.  If you have any questions, please call the alderman's office.

The Block Club is grateful to Alderman Smith for her efforts in this matter.

Nursing home owners pay fine, surrender license

|

State records show that owners of a troubled Chicago nursing home have paid fines totaling $20,000 and surrendered the facility's license.

The for-profit Somerset Place housed more than 300 mentally ill residents until last month when the building closed. The nursing home had been cited repeatedly for fights, verbal abuse and lack of supervision and the federal government had terminated its funding.

A license-revocation hearing scheduled for this week was canceled because of the settlement with the state, which was reached last month but not publicized.

Somerset Place was owned by a group of investors. It's possible for the same owners to renew the home's license because the state agreed the settlement couldn't be used to deny a license renewal.

The owners admitted no wrongdoing.

Somerset Place Lost Government Funding Due To Fights, Verbal Abuse In Facility
CHICAGO (CBS)

Community and religious leaders in the Uptown neighborhood are holding a candlelight vigil Monday afternoon as a troubled nursing home closes.

The vigil will be held outside Somerset Place Nursing Home, at 5009 N. Sheridan Rd.

Federal authorities recently terminated Somerset's government funding following citations for fights, verbal abuse and lack of supervision. In addition, the State of Illinois has acted to revoke Somerset's nursing home license.

Somerset until recently housed more than 300 mentally ill residents, but some of them have started to move into other facilities. The state's public health department has a monitor visiting Somerset daily to make sure residents know their options.

Advocates for the mentally ill are complaining that the nursing home did not give residents enough time to transition into living outside the facility. ...
