MPAC Meeting Summary
April 27, 2010
Attendees: Sylvia Moore, Grace Chun, Shari Townsend, Suzette Logan, Arnie Rimando, Derrick Martin, Ned Read, Joe Trendl
Meeting was called to order at 6:30pm
March Minutes were tabled for review at a later date.
MPAC
welcomed Suzette Logan as a new Council member
Arnie Rimando presented an overview of park activities:
Good news on Jennifer, she should be returning to work in a week or so
Upcoming programming about 60% full thus far
4-5 year old programming sold out
6-7 year old programming nearly sold out
8-9 year old programming wide open
11-12 year old programming sold out
Arnie will attempt to get costing on needed electrical cords for the Margate sound system and present to MPAC for help in the purchase
Yoga ----Thursday session---has been moved to 6pm from 6:30pm for some reason, not being attended at that time slot (only 2 people last week) Azure wants to drop it. Suzette shared that the Monday class at the regular 6:30pm start is drawing some 20 people. Arnie / Derrick will speak to Azure. Try and return it to the regularly scheduled 6:30pm and get it back on track. 6pm is just too early for people returning home from work.
Zumba doing very well. Sharri noted that Zumba is also at Chase Park and they are attracting some 40-50 people per session---we perhaps need to get the word out in a better fashion.
We will discuss a possible Line Dancing Program with Jennifer when she returns
There has been some on and of discussion with the Park District for a possible water element at the play lot, but it’s not a top line priority as we are so near the lakefront
Derrick offered that interviewing may be winding up on the replacement for Jason and we could be getting a new instructor soon
Joe Trendl presented the following:
A reminder that the free summer movie in the park is Blind Side on July 2nd
The city has chosen the Margate area for a July 3rd Fireworks celebration, the field house will be used for the Chicago Police and the neighborhood streets will be closed to vehicular traffic at some point during the day---no ingress or egress (resident or not) when they are closed.
The Saddle Cycle Club will hold their annual fireworks show on July 4th.
Ernie Constantino (48th Ward), Barbara Wood (CPD) and Joe Trendl walked the Margate Park to discuss future tree planting in the area. It was suggested that a serpentine line of trees be planted as shade trees along the exterior of the north fence of the play lot. Additional trees/shrubs will be planted along the park side of the Foster Ave LSD southbound ramp. Help to alleviate noise and protect those playing in the park from running out into the ramp traffic.
There was discussion as to what the Council can do to try and provide programming for kids over the age of 13 that are not being served by the Park District at this time
Discussions began on alternative programming for all ages to coincide with Yoga and Zumba—Sharri suggested Origami and we will look into it and discuss with Jennifer.
MPAC will look into forming as a 501-c-3, possible speaker next month.
MPAC will try and source the Chase Park Council ‘plan’ for review and discussion as to whether some ideas could be incorporated into MPAC.
